Advertising case study 1: OMO print advert

Image
Advertising case study 1: OMO print advert 1) The advert was produced in 1955 2) In most adverts in the 1950s, women were presented as domestic, with a role of being housewives, and being inferior to their husbands and other men. 3) The heading message and typography promote the product due to the fact that is a washing product and is presented as being able to clean to a completely new level that has never been seen before. It promotes the product also as being necessary and therefore encourage people [women] to buy it. 4) The costume of the woman actively presents her as a housewife as she has a rag thrown over her shoulder. This shows that she is in the middle of cleaning and therefore depicts her as being a housewife. In addition, the makeup further reinforces the idea that she has to look good for her husband and appear perfect at all times. The placement of the model being directly in the view of the camera and slightly lower makes her seem like she is enjoying what sh...

Gender Stereotypes In Advertising

Image
Gender Stereotypes In Advertising 1) Three adverts featuring women from the 1950s/1960s: 2)  3) Stereotypes of women in 1950s/60s adverts were dehumanising and degrading them in order to appeal to men and create a stereotype that involved women being made to look pathetic and only good for cooking and cleaning. There were only good-looking, white women in these adverts which might have been done in order to uphold a standard of women being objectified so that they can keep their husbands happy, further accentuating the point that they are only there to please men. 4) In post-2000s adverts, however, women were sexualised a lot more, and also used as good-looking and majority white with lots of makeup. This standard may have been used to present a standard of beauty, perhaps suggesting that unless women were extremely beautiful or wearing lots of makeup, slim, white and young they were not good enough, and should have to live up to this standard to be happy.  5) Representa...

Advertising and Marketing: Key conventions

Image
Advertising and Marketing: Key conventions 1) Some key conventions of print adverts are unique typography, a use of bright colours and contrast as well as a slogan. For example, a range of colours is used in the Skittles advert in order to bring attention to the product, which is represented through a pack shot in the centre of the advert. The unique font and typography are consistent throughout all of the adverts, which make the product recognisable and eye-catching to consumers. The background of the Skittles advert also further introduces the idea of a rainbow and links it to the slogan, 'Taste The Rainbow', which might connotate ideas of multiple flavours and a bright product. It might seem attractive to consumers and more delicious because of this. These will communicate to the audience feelings of positivity and an inclination to buy the product because of colour, a catchy slogan and a bright pack shot of the product.  2) The USP of the product might be the theme of rainb...

Film Industry: Final Index

Film Industry: Final Index 1 - Marvel Cinematic Universe 2 - Black Widow 3 - I, Daniel Blake

Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake

Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake 1) Independent media is when a film is not made by a huge company. The producers/directors have more creative input and have a lower budget than those working in bigger companies, and actors and actresses are usually much lesser known than those in bigger companies like Disney. In addition, the films made by independent companies usually make less money due to their lower budget and because they are less well-known. 2) I, Daniel Blake is about a man with an illness who endeavors to help a single mother and stand up. It is an award-winning drama that has a strong political message. Ken Loach is the director and is known for films which focus on real-life situations in order to provide an outlook on real situations that audiences can relate to.  3) The director of the film is Ken Loach who has worked on many films in the past and uses his films to convey strong political messages in order to tell real stories the represent the lives of ordinary people....

Film Industry: Black Widow

Film Industry: Black Widow   1) The companies involved were Marvel, Disney, Blitz, Warner Bros, and many more. 2) Conglomerate ownership is when a larger company owns smaller companies called subsidiaries. This links to Black Widow as Disney (a hugely successful company) owns Marvel (a subsidiary).  3) The suspenseful music, camera movement and stars in the film all indicate that the film is a big-budget film. Each part of the trailer and film has been made with precision which also lead to the conclusion is expensive.  4) The film was marketed through traditional methods, such as chat shows and interviews which featured the stars of the film. Posters and trailers were also used, as well as profiles promoting the film on social media. They were effective as they created lots of anticipation for the film and hype for It across all platforms. 5) The budget for the film was around $200 million and it made around $379 million.  6) I would consider it successful but not a...

Extension: The Guardian believes that the film is highly enjoyable and great fun for fans and everyone else. It recommends watching it and finds especially the storyline an important part of the film.  Extension 2: Marvel has survived so long by featuring flawed heroes, and using characters and stories to reflect social change. It also has been redefining superheroes as a whole and challengin...

Blog Feedback And Learner Response

Image
Jasmine GCSE Media blog feedback – December 2022 WWW : Jasmine - it has been a delight to have you in our Media lessons. You are clearly enjoying the subject as your blog is up to date and engaging. We hope this passion and commitment continues throughout the course. It is brilliant to see that you are now completing the extension tasks to increase your chances of achieving a top grade. Well done for also taking the initiative to create revision flash cards too. EBI: There are areas on your blog which are lacking in detail and depth. For example the Audience Reception theory (Harry Brown) and Audience Effects theory (Blue Planet 2 trailer) blogs need extended paragraphs. Adding this extra bit of detail can make all the difference in achieving a top grade. It would also be lovely to see you contribute more regularly during class discussions - I feel like the class would really benefit from hearing your ideas and opinions. LR:   Copy and paste this feedback into a new blogpost...

Industries: Ownership And Control

Industries: Ownership And Control 1) Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 because they saw them as competition and wanted to eliminate it by taking over Instagram. 2) The benefits for media companies for vertical integration are that they can make more money if they own more companies and have the chance to make money at every stage of production.  3)  The benefits for media companies for  horizontal integration is that they can widen their audience and find other ways to make money. It also lets them eliminate competition which helps to also make money.  4) A subsidiary is a smaller media company. 5) Examples of media companies that have used synergy to maximise profit are: Disney Universal  Coca Cola 6) 10 Companies are: Star Wars Marvel Sky ESPN Fox Entertainment National Geographic  Hulu The Modern Family The Simpsons ABC 7) Disney bought Fox because Fox are a hugely successful company and have a vast amount of titles under the Fox label. It may have also ...

Audience Effects Theory

Audience: Effects Theory 1) A Passive Audience is an audience that takes in information without questioning, challenging or truly understanding the media product, resulting in an 'injection' type of understanding.  2) An Active Audience is one that makes conscious choices about the media they are given to properly understand it and/or question it where necessary. 3) The Hypodermic Needle Theory is the theory that audiences are always passive because they always take the intended message from producers without questioning its reliability. 4) Examples of Uses & Gratifications: -  Information/Surveillance: The Times Newspaper - Personal Identity: Hollyoaks. It includes family life and scenarios (though overdramatized) used that audiences might be able to relate to. - Diversion/Entertainment: Netflix. It has lots of different shows and films on it which actively provide escapism and a good source of entertainment for the audience to enjoy. - Relationships: FRIENDS....

Media Assessment Learner Response

Media Assessment Learner Response 1) Grade 6 - 21/30.  WWW - Subject-specific terminology, detailed explanation and analysis. EBI - Effects of camera shots and m ise-en-scène in more detail. 2) Q1 - 1/1 Mark Q2 - 1/1 Mark Q3 - 10/12 Marks Q4 - 2/2 Marks Q5 - 4/6 Marks Q6 - 3/8 Marks 3)  A stronger question - Q2 and Q3. I did better in these questions because they involved denotations and connotations which were one of my stronger topics. 4) A weaker question - Q6. This is because I hadn't prioritised this longer question, and, due to an inefficient use of time, I didn't manage to answer this question nearly as well as I could have done. 5) Q3: In the Heat advert, Beyoncé is wearing a red dress. The connotations of this are love, power, and romance. This non-verbal code might connotate romance and might appeal more to a stereotypically female audience. In addition, the typography "Catch The Fever" has been written in the middle of the advert which might suggest t...

Audience Reception Theory

Image
Audience Reception Theory 1) The Preferred Reading of the media text means that the text is read as the producers intended. 2) The Oppositional Reading of a media text means that the text is read not as the producers intended, and from a point of view of someone who rejects the intended message. The audience construct their own view of the product. 3) The Harry Brown film aptly demonstrates the teenagers as being violent and rebellious. This is perfectly conveyed through the actions of the teenagers, which include setting things on fire and killing or threatening people to assert violence. The use of this could present that the Preferred Reading of the film might be to sympathise with the main character, Harry Brown, and conclude that the film represents the majority of youth behaviour and reflects teenage behaviour because of the use of stereotypical representation.  4) The Harry Brown film might inspire Oppositional Readings of the film among youth because of the way it pre...

Demographics and Psychographics

Demographics and Psychographics 1) Media companies use their audience's education, age, gender, class and ethnicity to create a demographic profile of their audience. The acronym is called CAGE.  2) Media companies and advertisers increasingly use audience profiling along with demographics because the companies need to understand the audience's lifestyle and interests to sell a particular product.  3) I think that the psychographic groups that fit my own interests and lifestyle are The Mainstream and The Succeeder. This is because I feel like I follow the majority of what others like and find security important to me. I also feel like I seek out the best because things of high quality are important to me. I also feel in need of control of my own life to be able to understand what is going on around me and how to find the most important brands that are both not expensive and of good quality.

Camera Movement and Editing

Camera Movement and Editing 1) The camera movement at the beginning is slow and pans towards important objects and characters, such as the camera, hinting at the eerie way it follows the people who are boarding and leaving the train. In addition, the dolly at the beginning which focuses on the newspaper perfectly depicts the important points of the clip without using any narration or on-screen text (0.22). The cut towards the main character effectively draws the audience's attention towards the man and the fact that he is the wanted man on the newspaper. This may make the reader more intrigued or focused on the man who the camera cuts to (0.36). This atmosphere changes, however, when the camera cuts to the man leaving the train. The cut from him to the men with the guns actively presents an air of tension and suspense between the two parties, leading the audience to believe the two may be rivals, or that the men in black are officers of some kind (0.49). This directly influences th...

Camerawork

Image
Camerawork: Doctor Who, The Stolen Earth Camera Shots: 1) The opening two-shot introduces the characters and gives the audience a sense of who the characters are and a background introduction on their names and jobs. In addition, it keeps the audience interested as the shots jump between characters and their dialogue perfectly demonstrates key information that is necessary to the clip and environment.  2) The close-up at 0:43 brings into focus Dr. Jones and her significance as a character. It also draws interest from the audience as to the information about Jones and what her focus and background may be about. It zooms in on her surprised and attentive expression, which may help the audience to further sympathise and gain an understanding of her as a character.  3) The cut-in at 2:42 brings into light the props used in the scene to further understand the characters' purpose and the mission that they are going on that the audience can see. In addition, the props are used to hel...

Photoshop: Fruit Bowl

Image
Photoshop Fruit Bowl This fruit bowl has been done with autumn-style colours to represent the change of seasons from summer to winter. For example, the browns, greens and oranges have been used to show the different colours of the leaves that fall during this time, and some greens and browns have been used to depict nature and its change. In addition, the blues and yellows have been used to show the sky and how it would be like during this season. The reds and pinks have been used for the warm colours that might be associated with this season, such as fireplaces or some leaves.

Mise-En-Scène

Image
Mise-En-Scène 1) Costume - Will is wearing a red and yellow coat that is sleeveless. These are primary colours which may further demonstrate that he is around eleven years old. His shirt is striped and over another white shirt. This may show that the scene is in winter or autumn. Also, the white shirt looks to be slightly too small for him, which may perhaps represent his financial situation. The shirt and jacket, along with his blue jeans, may represent the fashion sense in the 1980s and clothing which may have been more popular back then.  2) Lighting - Lights are flickering on and off, which may signify to the audience that something dangerous is going to happen or the characters are in some form of danger. In addition, the darkness in the woods may also demonstrate eeriness or suspense that is building up. The constant focus on lighting throughout the clip may show the significance of it and the audience may believe it links to the monster.  3) Set...

Denotation and Connotation

Image
Denotation and Connotation Water Aid Advert Denotations : We can see a child looking at the camera in a quite upset way, wearing a worn shirt. In the background of the picture we can see a village or town. The wall beside the boy has been used to show the message of the advert, 'Dig toilets, not graves'.  Connotations : A non-verbal (symbolic) code might be the way the boy is sitting, rather slouched with a frown on his face. This might convey to the audience that he is in need or upset because he does not have money or water. In addition, the colours used in the background are quite dull and boring, maybe to contrast with the white of the text or symbolise a lack of water or joy which might have otherwise been found in colours and colourful images. Also, the background may imply that the child or people living there might be in a second or third-world country that is not as modern or developed as others.  Analysis : The text might make the audience feel pity for the bo...
