Mise-En-Scène
Mise-En-Scène
1) Costume - Will is wearing a red and yellow coat that is sleeveless. These are primary colours which may further demonstrate that he is around eleven years old. His shirt is striped and over another white shirt. This may show that the scene is in winter or autumn. Also, the white shirt looks to be slightly too small for him, which may perhaps represent his financial situation. The shirt and jacket, along with his blue jeans, may represent the fashion sense in the 1980s and clothing which may have been more popular back then.
2) Lighting - Lights are flickering on and off, which may signify to the audience that something dangerous is going to happen or the characters are in some form of danger. In addition, the darkness in the woods may also demonstrate eeriness or suspense that is building up. The constant focus on lighting throughout the clip may show the significance of it and the audience may believe it links to the monster.
3) Setting - The contrast between the warmth of Mike's house and the darkness and silence of the woods may demonstrate the difference between him and Mike. His house may also show how different him and his friends are. Also, the laboratory that has a large 'keep out!' sign on the outside may signify danger and the audience may will Wll to leave because of the opening scene with the scientist. The monster from the laboratory can be a sign to the audience that the area is dangerous and that the creature may strike again. Moreover, the background noise also builds suspense and tension.
Extension: Through the use of eerie music and the shadowy figure that is hinted towards throughout the clip, the audience may see that the genre is fantasy or science fiction. The scientist at the beginning of the clip may also show this. In addition, the main characters are young children, so the genre beng science fiction or fantasy would make sense to the audience. Moreover, the fact that the clothes and the like change throughout the series has a lot of technical accuracy and links specifically to mise-en-scène.
Extension 2: Paddington Film Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFuzMlfZGWM
1) Costume - The use of the hat and coat used are media codes used to identify the bear so that the audience can recognise him. In addition, in many scenes the bear is seen holding, wearing or using the hat or coat which could draw the audience's attention to them and demonstrate their importance. The primary colours may also stand out to younger audiences. Moreover, as Paddington is often around others in a bustling city, the colours of his coat and hat may be used to contrast him directly with them.
2) Action/Actors - The use of the bear's curiosity to the world he has arrived in is used adequately in many comical scenes which may keep the audience's attention on him and make them feel positive. The Brown family are often around the bear which may make him seem more human because he is often around them, or it may further demonstrate the fact he is not human and actually a bear because of their contrast to him. In London, many actors are used to be friendly to Paddington so that he seems more adjusted to society. It may also draw the attention to the fact that he is not human and actually a bear.
3) Lighting - Paddington is often seen in warm light which may have been used to further exemplify his features and props he has on him such as hat, iconic marmalade sandwich and bright blue coat. The added politeness of the bear may be a non-verbal code used to demonstrate his abnormality or make the audience feel more joyful seeing this feature. Furthermore, the bright lights may be used to make the settings around him pop, too, and stand out even more to the audience.
Extension: The opening of the trailer may demonstrate that the film genre is a family or comedy which can be enjoyed by anybody around the world. Perhaps the use of this may appeal to younger audiences and parents who would take note of the characters. Paddington has been used to add more interest for the audience and make them engaged more than if the main character was maybe a middle-aged man.
