Industries: Ownership And Control

Industries: Ownership And Control 1) Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 because they saw them as competition and wanted to eliminate it by taking over Instagram. 2) The benefits for media companies for vertical integration are that they can make more money if they own more companies and have the chance to make money at every stage of production.  3)  The benefits for media companies for  horizontal integration is that they can widen their audience and find other ways to make money. It also lets them eliminate competition which helps to also make money.  4) A subsidiary is a smaller media company. 5) Examples of media companies that have used synergy to maximise profit are: Disney Universal  Coca Cola 6) 10 Companies are: Star Wars Marvel Sky ESPN Fox Entertainment National Geographic  Hulu The Modern Family The Simpsons ABC 7) Disney bought Fox because Fox are a hugely successful company and have a vast amount of titles under the Fox label. Audience Effects Theory

Audience: Effects Theory 1) A Passive Audience is an audience that takes in information without questioning, challenging or truly understanding the media product, resulting in an 'injection' type of understanding.  2) An Active Audience is one that makes conscious choices about the media they are given to properly understand it and/or question it where necessary. 3) The Hypodermic Needle Theory is the theory that audiences are always passive because they always take the intended message from producers without questioning its reliability. 4) Examples of Uses & Gratifications: -  Information/Surveillance: The Times Newspaper - Personal Identity: Hollyoaks. It includes family life and scenarios (though overdramatized) used that audiences might be able to relate to. - Diversion/Entertainment: Netflix. It has lots of different shows and films on it which actively provide escapism and a good source of entertainment for the audience to enjoy. - Relationships: FRIENDS. The show h

Media Assessment Learner Response

Media Assessment Learner Response 1) Grade 6 - 21/30.  WWW - Subject-specific terminology, detailed explanation and analysis. EBI - Effects of camera shots and m ise-en-scène in more detail. 2) Q1 - 1/1 Mark Q2 - 1/1 Mark Q3 - 10/12 Marks Q4 - 2/2 Marks Q5 - 4/6 Marks Q6 - 3/8 Marks 3)  A stronger question - Q2 and Q3. I did better in these questions because they involved denotations and connotations which were one of my stronger topics. 4) A weaker question - Q6. This is because I hadn't prioritised this longer question, and, due to an inefficient use of time, I didn't manage to answer this question nearly as well as I could have done. 5) Q3: In the Heat advert, Beyoncé is wearing a red dress. The connotations of this are love, power, and romance. This non-verbal code might connotate romance and might appeal more to a stereotypically female audience. In addition, the typography "Catch The Fever" has been written in the middle of the advert which might suggest t

Audience Reception Theory

Image
Audience Reception Theory 1) The Preferred Reading of the media text means that the text is read as the producers intended. 2) The Oppositional Reading of a media text means that the text is read not as the producers intended, and from a point of view of someone who rejects the intended message. The audience construct their own view of the product. 3) The Harry Brown film aptly demonstrates the teenagers as being violent and rebellious. This is perfectly conveyed through the actions of the teenagers, which include setting things on fire and killing or threatening people to assert violence. The use of this could present that the Preferred Reading of the film might be to sympathise with the main character, Harry Brown, and conclude that the film represents the majority of youth behaviour and reflects teenage behaviour because of the use of stereotypical representation.  4) The Harry Brown film might inspire Oppositional Readings of the film among youth because of the way it presents the

Demographics and Psychographics

Demographics and Psychographics 1) Media companies use their audience's education, age, gender, class and ethnicity to create a demographic profile of their audience. The acronym is called CAGE.  2) Media companies and advertisers increasingly use audience profiling along with demographics because the companies need to understand the audience's lifestyle and interests to sell a particular product.  3) I think that the psychographic groups that fit my own interests and lifestyle are The Mainstream and The Succeeder. This is because I feel like I follow the majority of what others like and find security important to me. I also feel like I seek out the best because things of high quality are important to me. I also feel in need of control of my own life to be able to understand what is going on around me and how to find the most important brands that are both not expensive and of good quality.
