1) Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 because they saw them as competition and wanted to eliminate it by taking over Instagram.

2) The benefits for media companies for vertical integration are that they can make more money if they own more companies and have the chance to make money at every stage of production. 

3) The benefits for media companies for horizontal integration is that they can widen their audience and find other ways to make money. It also lets them eliminate competition which helps to also make money.

However, it has changed because there is a wider variety of people who enjoy the show and are fans (Whovians).
