Television: Industry Contexts — The BBC

Television: Industry Contexts — The BBC

1) The BBC's mission statement is to inform, educate and entertain. This means that it aims to provide information, support people and their learning, produce creative content, and uphold diversity and representation.

2) The BBC is funded by the government, meaning that it is paid for by the TV licence and is paid for by the people of Britain. The TV licence is currently £159 per year. Although other television companies rely on advertising, the TV licence is the only way that the BBC makes money, meaning it does not use advertising.

3) The BBC must provide balanced information, support the learning of people of all ages, produce creative output, have diverse content and reflect the United Kingdom, its culture and values to the world.

4) Regulation is the reviewing of a product to make sure that its content is not inappropriate or harmful. The BBC is regulated by OfCOM, which checks all television channels and produces a code of conduct that all of them must follow. Otherwise, they have a risk of having their licence removed, meaning they cannot make content, and may be fined heavily. This includes various other quality standards.

5) Doctor Who and His Dark Materials help the BBC to meet its mission statement by providing content that informs the public of various topics, such as science fiction. In Doctor Who, the main genre is science fiction, which means that there is a variety of scientific knowledge and understanding, which helps to inform and educate the viewers. Furthermore, Doctor Who provides creative output and is incredibly immersive, which means that it is very entertaining. However, Doctor Who is not diverse and does not uphold diversity, which means that it does not meet the last bullet point of upholding diversity.
His Dark Materials is diverse, creative and provides knowledge to its audiences. It has a mixed cast that represents people of all backgrounds, challenges stereotypes and subverts them. It also is educational by introducing the fantasy world and helping the viewers to understand it, and also has an immersive storyline. This means that it meets the mission statement well, and upholds the values of the BBC thoroughly.
