OSP & Videogames: An introduction
OSP & Videogames: An introduction
1) The first video games were very simplistic and straightforward, with not many graphics and limited colours.
2) Video games have become more developed and much more complex because of the development of technology that has directly influenced the variety of genres and storylines within video games.
3) The more popular video games feature an appealing character that is distinguished by a specific appearance or outfit. The game usually is part of a series or has a film to accompany it to make it iconic. Usually, this helps to create a wide fandom and creates more audiences across more levels of marketing. Audiences might find these games appealing because they allow the user to have a form of escapism or diversion. Additionally, the audience may be able to form a personal relationship with the characters or identify with them based on certain character traits that are reflected in the characters.
4) Criticisms include a threat of encouraging violence in young people or upholding certain stereotypical representations of a minority.
Fortnite:
1) At the time of the article, the game had over two hundred million players worldwide. Now, the number has doubled to over four hundred million players.
2) The audience pleasures may include a visceral pleasure of violence that can create a thrill for players.
3) Some people may criticise Fortnite because it is especially violent and may encourage young, impressionable people to be violent as well.
4) "If kids are influenced to act violently all they have to do is watch WW2 on the History Channel, learn about King Henry VIII's wives or just watch the news." - I agree with this one because video games like Fortnite cannot be evaluated for all the reasons for children's violence when there are various other aspects of society that are just as, if not more, violent.
"I guess parents might also be worried about the ideas propagated at various levels by such war-of-all-against-all games." - This acts as a contrast to the previous comment because it suggests that ideas in video games promote violence. I disagree because, in reality, there are television shows and other aspects of society that actively do promote violence that should be considered more concerning.
