Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake

Film Industry: I, Daniel Blake

1) Independent media is when a film is not made by a huge company. The producers/directors have more creative input and have a lower budget than those working in bigger companies, and actors and actresses are usually much lesser known than those in bigger companies like Disney. In addition, the films made by independent companies usually make less money due to their lower budget and because they are less well-known.

2) I, Daniel Blake is about a man with an illness who endeavors to help a single mother and stand up. It is an award-winning drama that has a strong political message. Ken Loach is the director and is known for films which focus on real-life situations in order to provide an outlook on real situations that audiences can relate to.

3) The director of the film is Ken Loach who has worked on many films in the past and uses his films to convey strong political messages in order to tell real stories the represent the lives of ordinary people.

4) The film was marketed through Guerilla Marketing and disruptive methods which shows that they targeted real people in order to spread awareness of the issues presented in the film which might directly impact the people. This included graffiti and gaining local support through screenings that would be free or 'pay what you can'.

5) Jeremy Corbyn attended the London Premiere and Secret Cinema organised a screening of the film in both London’s East End and Newcastle. This may have caused left-wingers and first-time voters to agree with the main message of the film and cause more hype around the issues of the film.

6) The estimated production budget of the film was £2 million and it made around £11 million which is over five times as much as its budget. However in comparison to other films made by well-known companies it has only made a fraction of the amount.

7) I, Daniel Blake is a lot less successful than films made by Hollywood, such as Black Widow, which made over ten times the amount I, Daniel Blake made. In comparison it is also relatively low-budget and much less impressive in terms of earnings within the box office. As the MCU and Disney are franchises, I, Daniel Blake has made less money in other ways such as merchandise and star power because it is an indie film.

8) I believe that I, Daniel Blake was a success as it was incredibly popular, made lots of money and spread an important message among fans and others which may not be seen within Hollywood. It also made over five times its budget which means it is especially prosperous, as it is an indie film and has much lesser-known actors and actresses.
