Paper 1 Assessment: Learner response

Assessment: Learner Response 1) WWW: Overall, a very successful paper with lots of noteworthy credit such as unseen product analysis and Tatler. EBI: You miss out on marks due to not enough media terminology such as magazine conventions or not enough overall analysis in depth. 29/42 - Grade 7. 2) No direct address but the subject’s eyes are focused on pushing the heavy tyre  (physical exertion) which connotes determination and power in the face of adversity.  This is reinforced by his facial expression which has his mouth open in a roar which  connotes supremacy and effort. ‘Begins off-field’ connotes preparation and a subversive look at sporting events  (focusing on the training rather than the event itself) and underpins the above  connotation. The use of the spotlight (through the flood lit logos) links to sports matches and  connotes drama/excitement but also shines on the main image connoting his  power. 3) Main narrative theories: - Propp's ...

Preliminary Exercise Feedback And Learner Response

Preliminary Exercise Feedback And Learner Response 1) WWW: You have displayed some excellent editing and technical skills throughout this preliminary exercise. Lovely angles and shots coupled with some really good acting especially from your part. EBI: The biggest improvement needs to be ensuring you film content outside of school to establish the fantasy genre and not limit yourself to filming at school; this will improve the overall quality of your coursework project. The other thing to work on is using audio to further establish your genre e.g. fantasy soundtrack behind the chase scene. 2) WWW: - The filming went especially well as we managed to get a lot of shots done in a short space of time. This was useful when it came to editing, as we didn't need to worry about having a limited number. Additionally, it provided us with a wider variety to work with and proved to give us more creative freedom. - The editing went really well because I had a lot of shots to work with. Working ...

Coursework: Pre-Production

Coursework: Pre-Production  1) Script: (draft) Locations:  An exterior of a dark, gloomy wood. It is dimly lit and there may be few flickering street lamps in the background that provide a faint glow of light.  A dimly lit, blurry interior of a room in an unspecified building.  Ext. abandoned wood in which the protagonist is running. Their movements are urgent, and their breath comes out in short, sharp breaths - desperately. While they run, the clip demonstrates a variety of angles that set the pace to be sharp and fast. During their running, there will be flashbacks in forms of memories that the protagonist has. They feature a second character - the foil (a character whose personality clashes with the protagonist's) - who is in a dimly lit room with the protagonist.  Continuously, flashes of their last conversation will resurface in between clips of the protagonist, who is running away from this setting and towards something else. The memories will feat...

Coursework: Preliminary Exercise 2023

Coursework: Preliminary Exercise 2023 1) I plan to make a short chase scene involving two characters. One character will represent "good" and will be running from the second character, who represents "evil". They will both be in a dystopian world, in which they are under a lot of constraint from the government. The evil character will be chasing the first character because they have been instructed to do so. However, in reality, the second character is a pawn in the form of this world and does not understand why the first is rebelling against the totalitarian society.  There will be a variety of camera shots and angles such as medium shots and low/high shots to represent the tension and suspense in the scene. Both characters will be teenagers who are trapped in this society so that it can relate more to children who watch it. Additionally, using young people will be more appropriate for a family audience. The setting will be a pathway that is covered in trees, whi...

Summer Project: Coursework Planning

Summer Project: Coursework Planning 1) a. Narrative and genre: it is a revelation scene where Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter discuss the fear they have inflicted upon the children of their world and the destruction they have caused. Mrs Coulter is Lyra's mother and has created machines capable of tearing children apart by separating them from their Daemons. Lyra's father informs her that it is not right and needs to be ended. It fits the fantasy genre due to the mention of multiple worlds, as well as Daemons and angels. The narrative is communicated through the dialogue between both characters.  Technical codes: many shots are used to represent Lord Asriel's superiority and Mrs Coulter's inferiority. A low shot is used to depict the former's power over her, and to show him as the stronger person in this situation. Mrs Coulter is shown using a high shot to show that she does not have the upper hand in the situation. Furthermore, fantasy music is used to exemplify Astr...

Radio: Launch Of BBC Radio 1 CSP

Radio: Launch Of BBC Radio 1 CSP Historical, Social And Cultural Contexts 1) Before 1967, there were three other radio stations.  BBC Radio Home, which mostly broadcasted educational programmes and news, which was replaced by BBC Radio 4. Also, there was B BC Radio Light, which broadcasted mainly comedy, drama and music (replaced by BBC Radio 2) and B BC Third, which continued until 1970. 2) The BBC reprogrammed their shows in the summer of 1967.  Radio 1 offered continuous "popular" music and Radio 2 was for more ''easy listening''. Television: His Dark Materials - Audience and Industry

Television: His Dark Materials - Audience and Industry  Audience: 1) I think the target audience for His Dark Materials is mostly teenagers and young adults. I believe that it is not particularly young audiences such as children, due to some themes in the series being violent. The series was rated 14+ by HBO and 12 by the BBFC, which demonstrates that the target audience would be adolescents and older. The psychographic groups may be Explorers and Aspirers or Succeeders, as the series involves strong, determined characters; the audiences may be able to relate to or identify with them.  2)  Audience Pleasures:  Personal Identity: The show has a wide diverse cast and a large amount of characters, whose personalities are three-dimensional; the audience can identify with them. Furthermore, teenagers especially can identify with many of the characters as there is a wide representation of characters who frequently subvert and reinforce stereotypes. Personal Relationships: ...

Television: His Dark Materials - Language and Representation

Television: His Dark Materials - Language and Representation Language: 1) Camerawork, editing and sound: In the beginning of the episode, the use of epic orchestral sound and epic nondiegetic sound is used to create drama and tension and reflects the locations within the episode. It also sets the genre and atmosphere, creates suspense and helps to create pace as well as excitement. Towards the end of the episode, non diegetic sound reflects the intensity of the the scenes and signifies the danger and supernatural events. The diegetic dialogue between Will and Lyra is used to emphasise their growing friendship and closeness.  In the beginning of the episode, the use of camerawork and editing consists of low angle shots of Lyra and Mrs Coulter makes them seem powerful and reveals their dominance. The daemons and setting are used to present the idea of fantasy and the unearthly backdrop. The wide, establishing shots are used to emphasise the setting. Towards the end of the ...

Doctor Who: Audience and Industries

Doctor Who: Audience and Industries Audience: 1) The target audience was predominantly white, British males in the UK. However, it has changed because there is a wider variety of people who enjoy the show and are fans (Whovians). For example, there are many international fans and a wider diversity of people from different backgrounds.  2)  Personal Identity : The audience may be able to relate to the teenagers or teachers because they reflect typical society at the time; they may be able to relate to the ordinary life of the characters. Personal Relationships : The audience may form personal connections if they can relate to the characters or identify with the backgrounds of the characters, such as the teachers or Susan.  Diversion (Escapism ): The audience may find escapism within the show as it has elements of sci-fi which could distract the audience from their day-to-day lives.  Surveillance (Information/Facts) : The show is science-fiction so it can provide infor...

Doctor Who: Language and Representation

Doctor Who: Language and Representation  Language and Representation: 1) Camerawork and sound : - The theme tune indicates that the genre is science-fiction   - Graphics and camerawork aptly demonstrate that the episode is from the 1960s. The camera movements are clunky and disorganised. The graphics are from a simple text and font.   - Close-ups of the characters are used in order to indicate the emotion of them, for example being scared or anxious.   - Sound effects for the TARDIS are used to show that the genre is science-fiction.   Mise-en-scène: - The setting often indicates the mysterious and eerie mood of the episode, as well as linking back to the science-fiction genre. - The bright lighting of the TARDIS juxtaposes the darkness outside and creates binary opposition. Narrative and genre: -  The enigma codes link to time travel and the science-fiction genre. - There is a conflict indicated by the speech used by the Doctor.  - Propp's Charac...

Television: Introduction to TV drama

Television: Introduction to TV drama  1) The His Dark Materials trailer has the typical conventions of a TV drama. This is because it features an ensemble of characters, as well as a narrative arc that persists throughout the entirety of the series. 2) The genre that is used is fantasy, though it can also be a hybrid of it and action or mystery, as some of those conventions have also been used in the trailer and throughout the series. 3) The narrative that is used is one which involves the main character, Lyra, and the teenage boy, Will, running from somebody or a group of people who are looking for them. In addition, the use of the 'daemons' (animal companions) are used to introduce the idea of fantasy and other worlds, which are mentioned in the trailer. The characters introduced are Will, Lyra and the group of adults, who seem to be both friends and enemies. The typical convention of good vs evil is also mentioned throughout the books and the series, which is a convention...
