Music Videos: Introduction

 Music Videos: Introduction

1) The key conventions of a music video involve a performance, such as singing and dancing, a narrative or storyline, which helps to invest the audience in the video, and intertextuality.

2) Intertextuality means that a media text references another media text.

3) In 1981, MTV was launched, which helped music videos become a major part of the music industry.

4) MTV launched in 1981. Music videos were especially important in the 1980s and 1990s because they helped aspiring music artists to become well-known and to engage a fanbase with their music.

5) In the digital age, music videos are distributed and watched on social media platforms and streaming services such as YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music. Platforms like MTV are used less and the focus is on social media to distribute music videos.

Extension Tasks:

1) I believe that YouTube is good for the music industry. While there are negatives, I believe that YouTube can help musicians connect with fans all over the world and reach a much wider range of people than ever before. Furthermore, many fans can access the music without having to travel to concerts or tours, which may show that they can gain a larger fanbase than they might have been able to do previously. The things that come indirectly from YouTube – for example, touring and selling merchandise online – would be impossible without it.

2) I disagree that they're more influential. I think that music videos can help artists much more easily than videogames can, as they are more accessible - on YouTube and social media - than video games are.
