Coursework: Statement of Intent

Statement Of Intent:

  • Title: In Your Favour
  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Extract: Last two minutes of the middle of Season 1

Narrative: two characters are involved: the protagonist and foil. The foil or false hero (Propp) will not have been introduced properly; their identity is a mystery. They speak briefly about their society (diegetic sound), but their conversation escalates, and the protagonist leaves. In between this conversation, there will be flashforwards of them running, escaping the place where they speak with the foil. The beginning of the narrative will be an equilibrium, disrupted by the argument between the characters (disequilibrium), ending on a cliffhanger with some resolution (equilibrium - Todorov).

Non-diegetic sound, like 'Carolina' by Taylor Swift, will connote the fantasy genre and create suspense and tension (semantic code - Barthes). Diegetic sound, the dialogue, references the characters' feelings and memories (nostalgia) - due to their history, their feelings resurface, further pushing the narrative forward.

My scenes involve a forest and a small room. The forest connotes confusion (semantic code - Barthes), reflecting the protagonist's feelings about the situation they are in. Establishing shots will communicate the setting and close-ups for the emotions of the characters. Over-the-shoulder shots and long shots will establish the setting and movements of the characters, reinforcing their emotions.

The end of the narrative involves the foil sitting in desperation, having a moment of clarity. This communicates the previous section of the narrative, as it represents anxiety and stress to appeal to this age demographic (older children and teenagers), creating a personal identity for them (Blumler and Katz). Additionally, it will juxtapose the previous actions of the characters (binary opposition - Strauss). The characters will also be used to form personal relationships (Blumler and Katz).
