December mock exam: Learner response

December mock exam: Learner response

1) WWW: Strong in Q4 and 12-mark question on HDM.

EBI: Drifting off topic occasionally and need to work on timing.

2) Non-diegetic sound is sound that cannot be heard by characters and can only be heard by the audience. An example is music.

3) 1.3: May have mentioned dolly shots and a close relationship between Lyra and Will that can be identified from this. Additionally, I could have spoken about the camera angles, and how a low angle for Will is still used to make him look timid rather than powerful. A low angle for Lyra shows that she is in control while he is helpless and inferior.

4) Will subverts masculine stereotypes, and is shown to be inferior. Additionally, mise-en-scène shows that Lyra is more practical and not interested in stereotypical feminine beauty ideals.

5) Lyra represents the changing nature of society and is more independent. Susan reflects obedience and tradition for a 60s teenager, and the value of respect for elders. Media representations of teens/young adults usually identify this group by their attitudes, behaviour, language, clothing and music. There are many negative stereotypes of teenagers in television drama in which characteristics such as laziness, anti-social behaviour, inability to concentrate and self-indulgence are portrayed as ‘typical’. Additionally, Susan is clearly in touch with popular culture. As a stereotypical teenager, she is engrossed in pop music on her radio and her modern clothes differentiate her from the teachers. In spite of her intellectual superiority, she is polite and deferential to her teachers.

6) User-generated content identifies material contributed to media or posted on websites by non-professionals, and that which is chosen by the user.

7) Marcus Rashford’s Instagram engagement rate of 6% is exceptionally high. With more than 15m followers on Instagram this means an incredible number of ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ on his post. This boosts Rashford’s power and influence – and makes him even more appealing for mainstream brands and commercial partners. Marcus Rashford demonstrates this with his commercial partnerships with Burberry, Nike, Coca-Cola and more. The fact he appeals to such mainstream brands is evidence of his power in the digital age. Furthermore, There is an army of influencers: social media users and celebrities with large, devoted followings, who give their followers access to a carefully curated version of their lives. In this “authentic” context, sponsored content, known as “sponcon”, has proved a potent for selling products.

8) An unregulated internet preserves the freedom of speech in a medium to which almost half the world’s population has access. If regulations become more severe, the opportunities for self-expression, personal creativity and the ability to explore and perform identities would be harmed – users would be fearful of prison, fines or other forms of retribution. Open access to the internet and the freedom to express opinions and challenge those of others have become essential to a functioning pluralist democracy.

9) I revised slightly - possible a 4 or 5.

10) I want to revise structuring exam questions, and working on remembering to focus on aspects of the question. I could do this through past papers, and working on structuring my answers more effectively.
